This is my favorite week as a section member of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra.
Every August, the LPO performs a Pops series at the beautiful Keeneland Racetrack here in Lexington, KY. Keeneland is the site of top thoroughbred horse purchases. The audience of over 10,000 people is always electric for these shows. They lavishly decorate their long rectangular tables and come dressed in colorfully eccentric costumes as a last hurrah of the summer.
Last year, we performed a production of Wycliffe Gordon’s newest album Hello Pops! alongside Wycliffe and his International All Stars. It featured Alvin Atkinson on the drums…what a character! This special performance we surely my favorite of all the PoP concerts we’ve done at Keeneland. Previous shows include Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, II with George Daughtery conducting and crooner Matt Dusk singing the hit list of Sinatra and the Rat Pack.
This year’s performance is actually two different shows. Friday night features the classic film The Wizard of Oz where we’ll provide the live music while the film is projected on large screens. Saturday night features Matthew Morrison from the hit FOX television show Glee performing a wonderful mix of standards and originals.
